As Whitaker Endowed Chair in Oncology Services at Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, Dr. Henson’s role is to catalyze oncology program development for nine hospital system. He practices neuro-oncology at the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center.
Dr. Henson was born in Chattanooga, TN, and graduated from Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University) in Collegedale, TN. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, in Loma Linda, CA. Following a residency in Neurology under Gerald Fenichel, M.D., at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, Dr. Henson completed a 3-year clinical and research fellowship in neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City with William Shapiro, M.D., and Jerome Posner, M.D. He joined the Neurology Service at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, in 1991, becoming an Associate Neurologist at MGH and Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. In 2003 he became a diagnostic neuroradiologist in the MGH Division of Neuroradiology. Between 2008-2015 he was director of neurology services at Swedish Neuroscience Institute in Seattle and was Vice President of Medical Affairs at Swedish Medical Center.
Dr. Henson completed the Executive MBA program at the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business in 2013. He was appointed Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives in July of 2014 and serves on the Physician Executives Forum committee for that organization, as well as being chairman of the Physicians Executive Committee for the Georgia Association of Healthcare Executives.
He was cofounder and director of the Pacific Northwest neurotechnology cluster organization Northwest Neuroneighborhood, and was active in WINGS, the Puget Sound medtech angel group. His wife, Lily Henson, MD, is chief medical officer at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, GA.
